July 7, 2020 | Supporting Diversity in Study Abroad

Community engagement has always been a critical part of my life, and the importance of giving back was instilled in me at an early age. Over the past year, I have had the pleasure of working with Teens of Color Abroad (TOCA) as a founding Board Member. TOCA's mission is simple: cultivate the next generation of globally conscious youth of color through full language immersion study abroad experiences. As a young, Black student who was not able to afford access to such experiences when I was in school myself, I know all too well how this is the reality for many who find themselves in similar circumstances. I've never worked with an organization whose mission resonates with me the way that TOCA's does.

What's more is that the importance of TOCA's work is being highlighted by the COVID-19 Pandemic and the recent social unrest witnessed across the globe. Communities of color writ large are being disproportionately impacted by this health crisis, and opportunities for travel as well as language and cultural exchange will be even harder to come by. Now more than ever, I believe it is absolutely paramount to focus our resources and our attention on communities of color, and there is no better place to start than with our youth.
